In a small Tokyo café run by the Tokita family, one particular seat allows you to travel back in time. The rules are strict: you cannot change the present, you cannot leave the chair, and you must return before your coffee gets cold — or you’ll be trapped in the past forever. In this fifth instalment of Kawaguchi’s series, four visitors take the seat: a woman seeking her estranged father’s forgiveness, two friends torn apart by a romantic secret, a boy struggling with his parents’ divorce, and a new mother whose husband was killed before he could name their daughter. The magic here is not the time travel — it’s the discovery that you can’t rewrite the past, but you can say the thing you never said. Kawaguchi writes grief the way it actually works: not as a problem to solve, but as a conversation you never got to finish.
