Tsugami, the editor-in-chief of a newspaper in postwar Osaka, agrees to sponsor a bullfight — a spectacle that consumes him for months, making him as combative and single-minded as the animals in the ring. As the gamble devours his attention, his lover Sakiko watches from a distance, uncertain whether she wants him to succeed or be destroyed by his own obsession. Inoue's Akutagawa Prize-winning novella compresses an entire existential crisis into a single public event.
