About
A man is found dead at the base of seaside cliffs in the resort town of Hari Cove. The police call it an accident — until the victim turns out to be a former officer, and the cause of death carbon monoxide poisoning. Manabu Yukawa, the physicist known as "Detective Galileo," is in town for a conference on underwater mining and finds himself drawn into a case where the town's future and its buried past are inseparable. Higashino builds his mysteries the way engineers build bridges — every structural element visible in retrospect, invisible until the final load-bearing twist. The seaside setting gives this installment a melancholy atmosphere that deepens the puzzle rather than decorating it.
