A political activist is released from a South Korean prison after nearly twenty years. The country he returns to is unrecognizable — democratized, prosperous, amnesiac about the struggles that made it so. He travels to a rural village to find traces of the woman who loved him before his arrest, and what he discovers there becomes a meditation on memory, loss, and whether a life interrupted can ever be resumed. Hwang Sok-yong draws on his own experience as a political prisoner to write a novel that is both intimate love story and historical reckoning. The dual timeline — prison and freedom — reveals how much of a person survives incarceration and how much does not. A novel about the distance between the country you fought for and the one that exists when you finally get out.
