A third voice enters the story: Ushikawa, a misshapen freelance investigator hired by the Sakigake cult to track down Aomame after the Leader's death. From his stakeout near Tengo's apartment building, he pieces together the thread connecting two people who shared a single moment in an elementary school classroom twenty years ago. Meanwhile, Aomame discovers she is pregnant — impossibly, mysteriously — and pulls back from the edge of suicide to protect something she cannot explain. Murakami narrows the world of 1Q84 to its tightest orbit here, three lonely people circling the same few city blocks, each following a different signal through the dark. The final volume trades the sprawl of Books 1 and 2 for something more intimate — and more dangerous. Two moons still hang in the sky, but now there’s a staircase leading out.
