🇰🇷South Korea
Won-pyung Sohn is a South Korean author and screenwriter whose debut novel Almond (Amigdala, 2017) became a major Korean and international success — the story of a boy with alexithymia (the inability to feel emotions normally) who is forced to navigate grief and friendship after a violent incident kills his mother and grandmother. It is a deceptively simple book about the connections possible between the emotionally different, told with great delicacy and warmth.
The novel won the Changbi Prize for Young Adult Fiction and has been translated into numerous languages. Sohn is also an accomplished screenwriter and brings a scriptwriter's sense of pacing and character economy to her fiction.
