Bandi — a pseudonym meaning "firefly" — is the only writer to have smuggled fiction out of North Korea. The manuscript was smuggled across the border by a friend, eventually reaching publication in South Korea and then the world. Bandi's identity remains protected, and whether the author is still alive is unknown.
