Bandi

🇰🇷South Korea

Bandi — a pseudonym meaning "firefly" — is the only writer to have smuggled fiction out of North Korea. The Accusation: Forbidden Stories from Inside North Korea is a collection of stories written in secret over decades, each one illuminating a different facet of life under the Kim regime: the absurdity of ideology, the corrosion of trust, the small acts of resistance that keep the human spirit from being entirely crushed. The manuscript was smuggled across the border by a friend, eventually reaching publication in South Korea and then the world. Bandi's identity remains protected, and whether the author is still alive is unknown. The stories themselves — urgent, angry, and deeply compassionate — stand as an extraordinary act of literary witness.
