Dissolving Classroom
Translated by Jocelyne Allen
About
Wherever siblings Yuuma and Chizumi go, terrible things follow. Yuuma apologises compulsively — bowing, groveling, begging forgiveness with a fervour that makes people's skin crawl. His little sister Chizumi is worse. She grins too wide, says unspeakable things, and seems to enjoy the carnage that trails in their wake. Junji Ito's manga takes the concept of social horror literally: the politeness, the apologies, the performative humility of Japanese social life become mechanisms of actual, physical dissolution. A series of interconnected stories about a brother and sister who weaponize courtesy — and about the dark suspicion that the most polite people in the room might be the most dangerous.
