Otsuichi

🇯🇵Japan

Otsuichi (Hirotaka Adachi) is a Japanese author of horror and suspense fiction who began publishing at the remarkable age of seventeen, winning a Kadokawa Horror Fiction prize for his debut. His short story collections — Summer, Fireworks, and My Corpse; Zoo; Calling You — are masterclasses in the architecture of dread, demonstrating a precise command of narrative economy and a gift for images that lodge themselves in the imagination.

His work draws on the traditions of both Japanese horror (kaidan) and Western Gothic, and his best stories achieve the effect of the best horror: they use the supernatural to illuminate something true about ordinary experience.
